Gallery History:
One of the oldest galleries on the East End of Long Island. Established in the late 60's as The Tower Gallery, it was a venue for art exhibits and poetry readings by members of what became known as the New York School - painters such as Fairfield Porter and Mary Abbott, and poets such as Kenneth Koch and John Ashbery. As a result, the gallery became a magnet for serious artists who relocated to the area either full time or for the summer months, including painters such as Larry Rivers, Robert Dash, and Jane Freilicher.
The Tower was reopened in 2005 by painter Yolanda Merchant as the Ferregut Tower Gallery. It occupied the second and third floors of a brick and masonry building at
the southwest corner of Job's Lane and South Main Street. Its top-floor the exhibition space - the tower itself - looks out on both streets, and on its neighbors, the Parrish Art Museum and the former Rogers Memorial Library building, as well as the tops of some elms.

In 2007 the gallery closed due to zoning regulations and will open in a new location in teh Village of Southampton for the summer season of 2008.

The Gallery's mission is to continue the tradition of exhibits set by the Tower Gallery. That is, of promoting artists with strong and opposing visions. The Ferregut Tower Gallery has exhibited some of the gallery's original artists who's works contribute to the gallery's unorthodox diversity such as Fairfield Porter, Antonio Ciccone, Andy
Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Elizabeth Strong-Cuervas. And now, to exhibit Chinese Contemporary Art in both gallery locations: Southampton and Beijing.

In January 2008 the gallery opened an office in Beijing China to promote American artists from the gallery's roster and to promote Chinese artists to international companies in China and collectors in the United States and abroad. Ms Merchant started to exhibit Chinese Contemporary Art in 2006.

The gallery will participate in the following art fairs in 2008-2009: Dubai, Basel, Shanghai and Miami.

While Ms Merchant is in China the Southampton Gallery is closed. The first exhibition in Southampton is planned for May. It will feature Chinese emerging artists. Followed by an exhibition in July and August of established contemporary Chinese artist followed by contemporary Chinese artists living in the USA and abroad. Many of the artists from China will tavel to Southampton for the gallery openings.

The gallery will be open year round in 2008-2009. The gallery in Beijing will be open January- April 2008 and October 2008- March 2009.
